BEFORE I WAS BORN, MY FATHER, JAMES E. WILCOX, WAS DRAFTED TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY DURING WORLD WAR II on January 16,1943. His alcoholic father left him long ago, so Jimmy had to leave behind his 50-year-old, upset mother, Bertha Mae Wilcox. Nervous and alone, but excited, James rode a Greyhound bus from Cincinnati, Ohio to California. He had plenty of time to worry and wonder about his dire future. When he arrived in California, he was well received by his army comrades! Dad almost didn’t pass the medical exam due to his flat feet, but the army doctor liked his spunk, and the army let him be in charge of telecommunications while traveling behind his special unit in the deep jungle.
